History

Olivares & Cia. began as an intellectual property boutique in 1969.  Our mission then is our mission today – personal service, trust, and true client orientation through industry knowledge for all our clients doing business in Mexico and Latin America.

The Olivares & Cia. firm was founded to offer a forward-thinking alternative to the oligopolistic Mexican IP legal market in the late 1960’s. Companies and law firms managing international IP portfolios came to Olivares for its fresh approach to protecting intellectual property rights.

Sergio Olivares, Sr. the founding partner of the firm, broke new ground by becoming the first law firm in Mexico to join technical and scientific expertise to the practice of law. Mr. Olivares’ philosophy was simple, practical, and effective – you must be able to speak the technical language of the patent owner to best protect the owner’s patent rights. This vital cornerstone of a practical approach to patent law continues today. As a result, Olivares & Cia. has the most frequently awarded IP practice in Mexico.

We have extended our practice to offer new options for clients’ legal problems. As technology progresses, so does a client’s legal complexities. To better serve our clients, Olivares is consistently at the forefront of new practice areas concerning copyright, litigation, regulatory, anti-counterfeiting, plant varieties, domain names, digital rights, and Internet related matters.

Further, our corporate, commercial, and anti-trust areas increase opportunities for clients to obtain counsel in transactional structuring for managing, licensing, selling, acquiring, or financing IP portfolios.

Olivares & Cia. has long committed to developing the strongest group of legal professionals to manage the level of complexity and interdisciplinary orientation that clients require. During the first decade of the 21st century, our team made great strides in reshaping IP laws and changing regulatory authorizations procedures. Olivares has also won a number of landmark and precedent-setting cases at the Mexican Federal and Supreme Court levels.

More recently, we have created three specific industry teams – Pharmaceutical Law Group; Media, Sports & Entertainment Law Group; and Information Technology Law Group. These dedicated industry groups help companies manage all their specialist legal needs under one roof. Our clients benefit because the interdisciplinary approach along with a deep technical knowledge strengthens their ability to mitigate legal risk when doing business in Mexico and across Latin America.

Today, the Olivares firm has 45 attorneys working across all areas of corporate, commercial and intellectually property law. We serve many different industries, receive awards for excellence in legal service, and lead the charge in protecting clients’ valuable IP assets.

Through trust, value, and experience, Olivares & Cia. gets results.
