Alejandro Luna

Alejandro Luna joined Olivares & Cía. in 1996, becoming a partner in 2005. Mr. Luna discovered his interest in Intellectual Property while working in a landmark patent case lead by the founder of the firm Mr. Sergio Olivares Sr. Currently Mr. Luna is the Senior Partner for the Appeals Department.

He graduated from Universidad Latinoamericana in 1996, and holds four diplomas from the Universidad Panamericana. He also obtained a Master’s Degree in Intellectual Property Law at the Franklin Pierce Law Center in the United States.

Since joining Olivares & Cia. Mr. Luna has participated in questioning the constitutionality of certain provisions of the Industrial Property Law, as well as the Federal Copyright Law. He is also the sponsor of an important proposal to modify the system of litigation and enforcement of Intellectual Property rights in Mexico. He was involved in the strategy and legal actions to include formulation and use patents in the linkage gazette in order to prevent the violation of pharmaceutical patents, as well as, in the correction of the life term of pipeline patents, in order to gain additional exclusive rights.

Mr. Luna is also the author of several articles on patents, litigation and regulatory issues. He is a part-time professor at the Universidad Nacional Autonoma de México (UNAM). Mr. Luna is part of the Legislative Committee of Asociación Mexicana para la Protección de la Propiedad Intelectual (AMPPI) and also a member of the International Trademark Association (INTA).
